State Truck Driving Championship Practice Test

The shipper is responsible for properly classifying hazardous materials because they are the ones who have the knowledge of the materials being transported and their inherent risks. Accurate classification is essential to ensure that the materials are handled, packaged, and labeled according to regulatory requirements, which is crucial for safety during transportation. The shipper must comply with guidelines set by entities such as the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This responsibility includes determining the proper hazard classification, ensuring proper documentation, and using the correct labeling and marking on packages.

While the driver, carrier, and regulatory agency each play important roles in the safe transportation of hazardous materials, their responsibilities do not include classifying and labeling these materials. The driver's main role is to transport the materials safely and adhere to safety protocols and regulations set forth. The carrier ensures compliance with laws and regulations but ultimately relies on correct classification provided by the shipper. The regulatory agency sets the guidelines but does not get involved in the individual classification done by the shippers.
